Makoto Phumodi Reveals ‘MAFS SA’ Journey, Tension and Divisions
JOHANNESBURG — May 2025
Married at First Sight SA bride Makoto Phumodi has detailed her experience on the hit show, revealing behind-the-scenes tensions and personal struggles. Her candid interview follows explosive revelations in the current season airing Sundays on Mzansi Magic and Showmax.
Four couples – Palesa Mphaki and Tshepo Miya, Makoto and Nkuleleko Mahlangu, Themba Khosa and Nelisa Ntabeni, Portia Baloyi and Bongani Luvalo – navigate married life after wedding strangers. Recent episodes featured dramatic wife gatherings where “bombshells were dropped about their husbands”.
Phumodi joined the show seeking unconventional love. At her wedding, she recognized groom Nkuleleko instantly: “I’ve seen this face before.” She prepared by “simply being open to the unknown”.
Controversy erupted early when Mahlangu allegedly demanded she switch churches: “The Bible says that a man must provide and a woman must submit, right? Imagine being asked if you’re willing to submit, but you don’t even know if the guy is willing to provide emotionally, financially, mentally, or physically.”
Intimacy conflicts surfaced when Phumodi disclosed: “My husband didn’t believe in foreplay or kissing when we first met.” She stressed emotional connection is essential.
Tension peaked with fellow contestant Tshepo Miya after he told her: “Monna ha a botswe o tswa kae,” which she interpreted as prohibiting spousal inquiries. When challenged, “he called me disrespectful”. (Miya’s response wasn’t available).
Off-screen, Phumodi maintains strong friendship with Palesa Mphaki but “no relationship with Nelisa”. Watching her journey feels authentic: “I’m not shocked by anything. People think I’m acting, but little do they know, I react like that in my everyday life.”
She urges viewers to continue watching: “There’s so much drama coming. People love drama and this show is packed with it… one of the best reality shows currently.” New episodes air Sundays at 6:30PM.
