New Toll Plaza Proposed at Beitbridge Border Post
JOHANNESBURG — 18 September 2025
The Department of Transport is seeking public comments on a proposed new toll plaza at South Africa’s Beitbridge Border Post with Zimbabwe. Submissions close on Friday, 19 September 2025.
South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) recommended the new toll facility under the National Roads Act. It would create a tolled 1.1 km stretch near the N1 highway border crossing. (SANRAL proposal)
SANRAL assumed management of this N1 section in 2018 and completed a R4-billion upgrade at Beitbridge since. The project enhanced traffic flow, parking areas and security. (SANRAL)
Beitbridge serves as the country’s busiest border crossing. Thousands of travellers and trucks move through daily, including regional trade with Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and other SADC nations. (SADC data)
Currently, Zimbabwe collects tolls only from southbound traffic. The new plaza would mark South Africa’s first toll collection point within its border post area. (SANRAL)
SANRAL stated: “Toll will be collected at a best-suited location, taking into consideration all the border post activities that are currently taking place.”
Earlier in 2025, SANRAL increased passenger vehicle tolls along the Limpopo N1 route by 4.8%. Total costs now reach R197 for the full route.
