Kaya FM suspends Sol Phenduka with immediate effect

Radio personality Sol Phenduka has been suspended by Johannesburg station Kaya FM pending an internal investigation, though the reason remains undisclosed.

Kaya FM confirmed the immediate suspension but did not specify the cause. In a statement, the station said: “Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently underway.”

Phenduka co-hosts Kaya FM’s Siz the World breakfast show alongside Sizwe Dhlomo, Mpho Maboi and Mfundo Mabalane (station lineup).

He is also known for co-hosting the controversial Podcast and Chill with MacG. The podcast previously drew criticism for comments about women, including media personality Minnie Dlamini.

The South African reported that Dlamini sued Phenduka and MacG for R2.5 million in damages, alleging hate speech, unfair discrimination and harassment based on sex or gender (The South African). The lawsuit outcome hasn’t been independently verified.

Phenduka joined Kaya FM in 2002 as a breakfast show co-host. His radio career includes a previous suspension from 5FM following comments about the Van Breda family murder case. 5FM said at the time: “Sol referred to her survival as ‘fresh’ because she was the only person who can identify her killer.”

Kaya FM has not indicated when the internal process will conclude or if further details will be released (no additional statement).
