SA Tourism Month 2025: Sustainable Transformation

Tourism Month 2025 Promotes Sustainable Travel in South Africa

South Africa’s Tourism Month launches under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, encouraging eco-friendly practices and community involvement. The initiative spotlights local attractions and sustainable business development nationwide.

The annual campaign has run since 2007. It first launched at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu, Eastern Cape, with the theme “Tourism opens doors for women” according to ATTA Travel. (ATTA Travel)

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille opened the media launch at Johannesburg’s Sakhumzi Restaurant on 13 August. De Lille highlighted the need for economic growth through promoting “hidden gems” in smaller towns and townships to diversify tourism beyond traditional “iconic” experiences. (SABC News interview)

Johannesburg Tourism Company CEO Thandubuhle Mgudlwa emphasized repackaging the city’s “hidden treasures” to gain a competitive edge. He said focusing on Johannesburg’s identity in mining, transport, heritage and lifestyle would boost visitor appeal. (Johannesburg Tourism Company)

The month concludes on World Tourism Day (27 September) in the Eastern Cape—its origin region. Sports and cultural events will showcase South Africa’s offerings. Some citizens view Tourism Month as routine, though it promotes national pride and “lekker” experiences (source not provided).

Activities throughout September will highlight sustainable transformation in communities and natural environments across the country.
