Bester, Magudumana attempt to block Netflix documentary release

Convicted criminal Thabo Bester and his co-accused Nandipha Magudumana have launched urgent court action to stop Netflix from airing a documentary about their alleged crimes.

The pair filed separate Johannesburg High Court applications this week to halt “Beauty and The Bester” ahead of its 12 September release. (court records)

Their applications claim Netflix’s three-part series violates their rights to privacy, dignity and a fair trial. (court filings)

Bester’s documents state he “strongly disputes the accuracy, fairness, and legitimacy” of the production. He called it “riddled with falsehoods, selective editing and unsubstantiated claims that are deliberately designed to evoke sensation”. (Bester’s court papers)

This follows their failed 2022 bid to stop Showmax’s “Tracking Thabo Bester” documentary about his prison escape. (court records)

The Netflix series focuses on Magudumana’s alleged transformation from celebrity doctor to a criminal accused. Authorities claim she helped Bester escape Mangaung prison in 2022 and run fraudulent businesses. (investigative report)

The docuseries includes interviews with Magudumana’s father Zolile Sekeleni — who faces related charges — and TV personality Pearl Thusi. (Netflix statement)

Bester and Magudumana face trial from 10 November for prison escape, fraud and multiple regulatory violations. (National Prosecuting Authority)
