IEC Sets 2026 Local Election Window as Parties Reach Record 472
PRETORIA — 2024
South Africa’s 2026 local government elections will take place between 2 November 2026 and 31 January 2027, though an exact date remains unconfirmed.
Electoral Commission (IEC) Chief Executive Sy Mamabolo announced the timeline but clarified the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will formally determine the date after concluding consultations. (IEC announcement)
Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa’s office has initiated these consultations but hasn’t finalized them.
A record 472 political parties are now registered with the IEC, including 34 new parties joining since the 2024 national elections.
Despite this increase, only 18 registered parties currently hold seats in Parliament.
Starting November 2025, the IEC will run preparation workshops for registered but unrepresented parties and independent candidates.
“These sessions will ensure that political contestants understand electoral processes and can participate fully,” Mamabolo stated.
He emphasized the IEC’s commitment to electoral integrity amid expanding party participation.
Mamabolo also warned citizens about fake job advertisements and fraudulent online pages misusing the IEC’s name, stating: “These scams are designed to mislead people into sharing personal information.” (IEC public alert)
