Fuel price cuts expected for South Africa in September
JOHANNESBURG — 27 August 2025
South African motorists could see lower fuel prices in September due to a stronger rand and declining international oil prices, according to the Central Energy Fund’s latest projections.
The Daily Fuel Price Report on 27 August showed significant over-recovery across all fuel types, caused by these favorable economic conditions. Over-recovery occurs when actual fuel costs are lower than expected.
If current trends continue until month-end, the following decreases would take effect on 2 September:
FUEL | PRICE CHANGE |
---|---|
Petrol 93 | decrease of 12 cents |
Petrol 95 | decrease of 4 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | decrease of 55 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | decrease of 55 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | decrease of 37 cents |
Market analysts caution these projections may change due to potential fluctuations in the rand/dollar exchange rate and oil prices (Central Energy Fund data). Brent crude traded at $67.85 per barrel and the rand at R17.69/$ when the report was published.
South African fuel prices depend on two main factors: international petroleum costs and the rand’s exchange rate against the dollar.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will make final price adjustments effective Tuesday, 2 September 2025. Current August prices remain:
Inland prices:
Petrol 93 | R21.51 |
Petrol 95 | R21.59 |
Diesel 0.05% | R20.00 |
Diesel 0.005% | R20.04 |
Illuminating Paraffin | R13.47 |
Coastal prices:
Petrol 93 | R20.72 |
Petrol 95 | R20.76 |
Diesel 0.05% | R19.17 |
Diesel 0.005% | R19.28 |
Illuminating Paraffin | R12.46 |
Motorists are advised to practice fuel-efficient driving until price changes are confirmed.
