Acsa Plans R21.7bn Major Airport Upgrades

Acsa invests R21.7bn in biggest airport upgrades in years

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) will spend R21.7 billion over the next year on its largest infrastructure drive in years, upgrading airports nationwide.

Chief Financial Officer Luzuko Mbotya confirmed half the funding (R10 billion) comes from long-term infrastructure loans secured on favourable terms. Acsa will cover the other half using its own reserves.

Lenders now see Acsa as attractive after improved financial results. The company doubled profits to R1.1 billion for the year ending March 2025 and holds R5.9 billion cash reserves (company statement).

Upgrades will continue through 2032, including a R5.7 billion cargo terminal at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg due by 2028-29. Preparatory work has begun, according to CEO Mpumi Mpofu.

For 2025/26, R2.3 billion is allocated to refurbishments. Projects include expanding Cape Town International’s domestic departures lounge and upgrading runways and terminals nationally.

The investment aims to modernise facilities and support growing passenger and cargo demand across South Africa’s airport network.
