
eThekwini tourism surges with R750m boost

The eThekwini Municipality reports a major tourism surge from January to May 2025, with international and domestic visitors boosting the local economy.
Data shows international arrivals increased by over 186,000 compared to 2024, generating over R750 million through card transactions and cash withdrawals. (Research and Data Unit of South African Tourism)
During April’s Easter period alone, tourism contributed R115.9 million – a 48% year-on-year increase. Top visitor sources include Mozambique, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Retail and dining emerged as top spending categories, fueled by leisure travel. More domestic tourists now prefer shared or self-catering accommodation over traditional hotels. (Research and Data Unit of South African Tourism)
City Manager Musa Mbhele stated, “These results are not just encouraging – they are a clear signal that our strategic investments in tourism are paying off.”
He added: “We remain fully committed to enhancing visitor experiences, expanding our offerings, and ensuring that Durban continues to thrive as a world-class destination for both leisure and business travel.”
Mbhele emphasized the performance reinforces Durban’s status among South Africa’s top destinations.
