Elderly hikers rescued after losing way in Kogelberg mountains
ROOIELS
Two elderly hikers have been safely rescued from the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve after getting lost near a waterfall during their descent.
The hikers, aged 75 and 68, became disoriented in mountainous terrain near Rooiels and couldn’t locate their trail, according to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).
Despite limited cellphone connectivity, the pair managed to contact CapeNature from a high point above the waterfall and shared their GPS coordinates (WSAR report).
WSAR Western Cape immediately deployed rescue teams. Two Overstrand responders set out on foot with torches and warm clothing, navigating rugged ground for nearly two hours before locating the hikers.
The lost men were found slightly off-trail, cold but “in good spirits,” confirmed WSAR. With assistance from the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS Drone Unit, the group was guided off the mountain.
The operation concluded successfully at 22:17, with all parties safely evacuated.
Authorities reminded wilderness visitors to always prepare adequately for hikes and to save the WSAR emergency number: 021 937 0300 (CapeNature advisory).
