Global Passport Costs 2025: SA Among Cheapest

SA Passport Costs Among Cheapest Globally in 2025

South African passport fees remain among the world’s lowest in 2025, costing R625.46 according to a recent study comparing charges across 23 countries. The survey revealed Australia issues the most expensive passports (R5 067.60), while India offers the cheapest at R327.55 (source not provided).

At 21st position on the list, South Africa ranks lower than Brazil (R604.04) but above last-placed India. All three countries offer 10-year validity passports.

The top five most expensive passports are dominated by Western nations: Australia heads the list, followed by Mexico (R4 130.19), USA (R3 088.88), New Zealand (R2 775.13), and Italy (R2 535.03).

Notably, South African travellers lose less money when replacing lost documents. “Replacing a lost or stolen passport costs less here than in countries where fees have soared,” the report states.

European countries show price variations: Germany charges R1 566.42 while Spain’s cost totals R655.96. Only Finland, Hungary, Sweden and Malaysia issue passports valid for five years instead of a decade.

Despite the current affordability, the study anticipates rising passport costs globally due to increased demand for international travel and higher administration expenses.
