John Steenhuisen spares Achi from being put down

Rescued Dog Achi Avoids Euthanasia After Government Intervention

A chocolate Labrador named Achi escaped euthanasia after urgent government intervention, following his dramatic sea rescue with his Swiss and German owners.

According to the NSRI, Achi and his owners were saved on 2 August when their yacht sank in rough seas off the Eastern Cape coast. The NSRI East London team pulled all three from a life raft in a high-risk operation (NSRI statement).

Their yacht and life raft remain missing. While Achi survived the rescue, he faced euthanasia due to quarantine regulations (Department of Agriculture rules).

Public outcry mounted as media highlighted Achi’s fate. In a last-minute intervention, Minister John Steenhuisen’s Department of Agriculture team and Ward 18 Councillor Jason McDowell successfully secured Achi’s safety (NSRI confirmation).

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon stated: “We have 100% confirmation that dog Achi will remain alive and healthy,” commending all involved agencies.

Tests confirmed Achi carries no health risks. While quarantine paperwork is being finalised, his future is secure.

Lambinon praised Nahoon Veterinary Clinic’s Dr Pete Wood for caring for Achi and thanked the public for their support.

“This was a powerful example of human compassion, swift government action, and community support all coming together to save a life,” Lambinon said.
