Lasizwe Returns to DStv for Awkward Dates Special After Earlier Controversy
JOHANNESBURG
YouTuber Lasizwe Dambuza is back on DStv with a special episode of “Awkward Dates”, his first appearance since a contract dispute earlier this year. The 27-year-old announced his return to MultiChoice’s Mzansi Magic channel via Instagram.
Lasizwe’s post declared: “GUESS WHO’S BACK ON DSTV? (Last Slide, is the mood!) An AWKWARD DATES SPECIAL EDITION on Mzansi Magic!” The show has aired, but it remains unclear whether this marks a permanent return (Instagram announcement).
Earlier in July, Lasizwe’s contract with MultiChoice reportedly ended after “Awkward Dates” – originally a YouTube show – was pulled from DStv. Reports cited guest complaints about consent and payment (City Press).
Some guests claimed they only agreed to appear on social media platforms, not national television, with some expecting compensation allegedly not provided. Content creator Dominic Zaca publicly criticized the production, stating: “What I understand is that you guys breached a verbal contract. You breached a written contract.”
He further commented: “I don’t know what contract you gave to MultiChoice because I would think MultiChoice would not air my episode knowing full well that I did not sign that contract in full agreement.”
MultiChoice had featured Lasizwe among eight young creators in March to boost youthful content. “Awkward Dates” received a South African Film and Television Award nomination during its initial run (MultiChoice announcement).
Lasizwe and his team haven’t publicly addressed the earlier allegations (no response available at time of publication).
