SA’s First Checkers Smart Trolley: Skip Queues

Shoprite Tests Smart Trolleys to Skip Queues at Two Stores

Shoprite Group is trialling high-tech trolleys that let customers scan and pay for groceries without queuing, initially rolling out in Brackenfell and Constantia.

Named “Xpress Trolley”, the system allows shoppers to scan items while moving through aisles. A live running total tracks purchases on a touchscreen display.

Shoppers pay directly from the trolley using their bank cards after bagging items, eliminating checkout queues. Neil Schreuder, Shoprite’s Chief Strategy Officer, said: “This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience.”

Ten trolleys operate at each pilot location: Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia. After payment, customers print receipts and exit through dedicated lanes.

Benefits include real-time spending tracking, promotions based on Xtra Savings profiles, and faster shopping. Its success may lead to nationwide rollout.
