Search Intensifies for Missing Pilot After Durban Coast Crash
DURBAN — Ongoing search since last Thursday
Authorities have intensified search efforts for missing pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray, a 61-year-old veteran SAA and aerobatic flyer from Johannesburg, after his light aircraft crashed off Durban's coast last Thursday. Police Search and Rescue divers, naval teams and volunteers are using advanced technology to find crucial evidence for his family. (Authorities)
Advanced seabed scanning started this week using a NORBIT MULTI BEAM SONAR system on NSRI and South African Navy vessels. Johannesburg company SEA SHADOW supplied the equipment with support from Durban Marine. (Authorities)
“Their contribution to this search has been instrumental and is deeply appreciated,” authorities said.
Local volunteer Peter Jacobs from GARMIN conducted additional searches using recreational sonar equipment aboard his private boat. (Authorities)
The recovery operation involves Police Search and Rescue, SA Navy divers, Durban Underwater Club, RESCUE SA, Metro Police Search and Rescue, and eThekwini lifeguards. Metro Police monitor the coastline for washed-up wreckage. (Authorities)
All recovered aircraft debris is stored at Virginia Airport. The Accident and Incident Investigation Division and SAPS are examining these items. (Authorities)
Authorities urge the public to report any debris findings to:
- SAPS: 10111
- NSRI Emergency Centre: 087 094 9774
- Marine Radio: Durban Radio or Durban Port Control
Some personal items from the wreckage have been returned to Blackwood-Murray’s family. “The family is in the care of authorities, regularly briefed, and has asked for privacy during this difficult time,” officials stated.
