Tyla Opens Up About Explosive Global Music Success
JOHANNESBURG — 20 August 2025
South African star Tyla has reflected on her meteoric rise from local newcomer to global chart-topper within just two years. Her breakthrough came when track “Water” went viral in 2023, featuring a signature dance move where she pours water over herself.
In an interview, Tyla described her artistic evolution beyond earlier singles like “Push 2 Start” and “Truth or Dare”. She stated: “I came into [the industry] so innocent, thinking it’s not that serious. That we’re just pop stars, dressing up and singing.” The singer added: “Over time, I realised you have to be strong. You can’t be a walkover. Be nice, but you have to know when to put your foot down.”
Tyla recalled her Johannesburg childhood as self-described “diva” behaviour. “I would make sure everyone’s paying attention — like, watch me,” she laughed about childhood performances. Several family members were musicians according to Tyla. “Music was everywhere. It was innate for me.”
She credits amapiano’s global breakthrough around 2021 for transforming opportunities. “Amapiano has changed South Africa,” Tyla said. “We have more jobs, more gigs. Our DJs are travelling, more artists and creatives have opportunities.” She described the genre as spiritual: “While everybody was stuck inside [during Covid], we were getting bangers… When I hear the log drum sounds banging, it’s something that’s deeper than just music.”
As a prominent amapiano ambassador, Tyla embraces being the first South African pop star to achieve global recognition. “I’m grateful. No matter how old I get, no matter what happens, my name will always be there as the girl that did that,” she stated. “It was a long time coming. We needed that African person to show people that we can do it.”
Tyla acknowledged her public learning curve with fame. “I’m kind of figuring it out in front of the world,” she admitted. She’s now comfortable with fans witnessing her growth: “My Tygers are seeing me grow for real. They’re gonna see all the mistakes and that’s okay.”
