UK Slaps SA Neighbour Botswana with Visa Rule From Oct 2025

The UK now requires all Botswana citizens to obtain visas before entering Britain—including short visits—effective immediately from today.

Botswana becomes subject to visa rules due to what the UK calls “misuse of the immigration system”. High numbers of its citizens claimed asylum on UK arrival since 2022. (UK government statement)

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated the move was essential to “disrupt and deter the abuse of our immigration system”. A 6-month visa currently costs £127 (±R2,943).

This mirrors South Africa’s experience: UK visas became mandatory for SA citizens in 2009 after concerns about passport fraud and illegal work. SA Home Affairs acknowledged apartheid’s legacy left millions undocumented, enabling document fraud. (Historical UK/South Africa records)

While SA’s case involved passport security, Botswana’s centers on asylum claims. The UK has expanded Botswana’s visa center capacity to manage applications.

Travelers with pre-approved Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) before 14 October may enter visa-free until 25 November 2025. After this date, visas become mandatory.
