SAWS Level 2 Warning for Powerful Cold Front Hitting Western Cape Coast
CAPE TOWN — 8 August
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 impact-based warning for dangerous conditions along the Western Cape coastline this weekend.
The warning is active from midnight Saturday, 9 August until midnight Sunday, 10 August. SAWS warned that the storm system will likely cause “dangerous sea conditions and strong winds” (SAWS).
Forecasts predict westerly to southwesterly swells of five to six metres, with wind speeds reaching up to 74 km/h. Coastal areas including Cape Town, George, Mossel Bay, Overstrand, and Bitou face the highest risk.
Key hazards include “large, unpredictable waves” posing serious risks to those near rocky shores and disruptions to port operations that could delay shipping activities (SAWS).
Small vessels face increased danger of capsizing in rough seas, while coastal infrastructure may sustain localised damage. Sand accumulation is expected on roads including Baden Powell Drive in False Bay.
SAWS strongly advised small vessel operators and users of personal watercraft like kayaks and jet skis to avoid the sea during this period.
Coastal communities and visitors should exercise extreme caution near shorelines and monitor official weather updates and municipal alerts for safety.
