Big Bust: Drunk Drivers Nabbed as “Unroadworthy” Vehicles Targeted at SA Pilgrimages

Over 50 motorists arrested for drunk driving in Polokwane weekend operation

National Traffic Police arrested 50 drivers for allegedly operating vehicles under alcohol influence on major Limpopo roads during a high-volume travel weekend.

The arrests occurred on the N1, N11 and R101 highways as officers monitored traffic surges from religious pilgrimages in Limpopo and a cultural festival in the Free State (RTMC statement).

Authorities issued fines to 163 minibus taxis operating without licenses and immediately removed them from roads for lacking proper documentation.

A total of 237 vehicles were discontinued for being “unroadworthy” with identified mechanical defects, while five motorists faced arrest for attempting to bribe officers.

Three additional arrests occurred for reckless and negligent driving during the operation.

Separately in Gauteng, 384 minibus taxi drivers were arrested for operating without driving licences (RTMC confirmation).
