Media personality Somizi Mhlongo will launch his first women’s clothing collection at this month’s Durban Fashion Fair.

The 52-year-old entertainer announced his runway debut via Instagram, writing: “10 days to my first runway show. To say I’m super proud of myself is an understatement. Hayi shem, I’m BOLD and BRAVE. See you at @dbnfashion_fair.” (Instagram post)

His collection ‘Sompire Femme’ will showcase on 19 September during the fair’s finale at Durban Exhibition Centre. The three-day event, now in its 14th year, runs from 17-19 September featuring 60+ designers across multiple genres. (Event information)

Mhlongo told IOL his Kwazulu-Natal roots motivated the Durban showcase: “My umbilical cord is in this province. My father’s family is based in KwaMashu. It is home. Therefore, being part of DFF is an honour and it is time.” (IOL interview)

The fashion line targets women who embody “elegance, strength, and bold self-expression,” combining ready-to-wear and couture elements aligned with the fair’s ‘The Awakening’ theme. Mhlongo emphasized: “I dedicate this line to Amandlozi akithi – my ancestors.” (IOL interview)

Responses to the announcement included praise from actress Nomsa Madida: “You are exactly who you say you are.” Another supporter commented: “We never stop learning or going after our dreams. Congratulations, Mr. Mhlongo. What an inspiration.” (Instagram comments)

This follows Mhlongo’s 2023 ‘Sompire Kids’ launch, fulfilling his stated ambition to design womenswear. In an Instagram Story, he added: “I’m super excited about this new journey… my new baby Sompire Femme.” (Instagram Story)
