New Upscale Checkers Opens at Hyde Park Corner

Checkers has opened a premium store targeting affluent shoppers in the prestigious Hyde Park area, featuring exclusive products and services for the mall’s upscale clientele.

The large store, positioned between Sandton and Rosebank within Hyde Park Corner mall, spans 40,000 square metres and attracts shoppers with high Living Standards Measure (LSM).

Mall owner Hyprop Investments secured Checkers as the anchor tenant earlier this year. The store debuts various premium offerings designed for convenience.

Shoppers will find an in-store Krispy Kreme, an in-store Kauai, a Meat Market with “restaurant-quality steak and free-range chicken”, and a bakery offering artisan breads and cakes.

Other features include a dedicated health and wellness section, authentic wine cellar, fresh produce section, hot and cold deli, and a Money Market counter.

The opening forms part of the Shoprite Group’s major expansion drive. The group has opened 194 new stores across South Africa in the past year, according to its operational update.

This includes 43 Shoprite stores, 38 Usave stores, 29 Checkers stores, 3 Checkers Hyper stores, 36 Checkers LiquorShops, 45 Shoprite LiquorShops, 60 Petshop Science stores, 10 Uniq Clothing by Checkers outlets, 8 Checkers Outdoor stores, and 1 Little Me baby store.

The group stated in its update: “We continue to expand our footprint as part of our omnichannel growth strategy designed to extend our reach in adjacent categories where we are currently under-represented.”
