SANDF Insists Congo Allowances Fully Paid Amid Soldier Complaints
PRETORIA — June 2025
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says all operational allowances for troops deployed to the peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been paid, contradicting soldiers’ claims that each is owed R600 000.
This follows reports of troops expressing frustration with military leadership over unpaid allowances, with individual soldiers alleging at least R600 000 in missing payments (source: military sources and soldier accounts).
One soldier reported they expected R100 000 per month for their 15-month deployment with the SADC force in eastern DRC but “instead received only R58 000” (Sunday Times interview).
The SANDF confirmed its Chief of Human Resources has launched an internal investigation to resolve allowance discrepancies (SANDF statement).
“This process is intended to ensure accuracy, transparency, and the prompt resolution of any discrepancies,” the SANDF stated, reaffirming commitment to fair and timely payments.
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga welcomed home 249 SANDF members in June following their rotation from the Southern African Development Community Mission in Congo (SAMIDRC).
The troops faced deadly clashes with M23 rebels earlier this year, resulting in 14 South African deaths during battles near Goma between 23 and 27 January 2025 (SANDF operational reports).
Soldiers with allowance queries are urged to contact the SANDF hotline at 012 355 6321 (office hours), 078 098 7651 (alternate) or email allowance.queries@dod.mil.za.
