Durban Reopens Doonside Beach, 2 Remain Closed

Two Durban beaches remain closed, 21 now open

The eThekwini Municipality confirms two Durban beaches remain closed due to poor water quality, while 21 others are currently open for swimming as of today. Doonside Beach has reopened after previously being shut, while Reunion and Winklespruit remain off-limits for swimming.

Municipal officials state that water quality issues dictate ongoing beach closures. “This status of beaches and pools will be updated as and when their status changes. You can still enjoy other recreational activities at closed beaches. You just can’t swim,” (municipal statement).

The 21 beaches currently open daily from 06:00 to 18:30 are Point Beach, Umhlanga Main, Umagaba, Ushaka, Addington, North Beach, Bay of Plenty, South Beach, Wedge Beach, Mdloti Main, Battery Beach, Brighton, Pipeline Beach, Toti Main Beach, Bronze Beach, Westbrook, Anstey’s Beach, Thekwini Beach, Laguna Beach, Country Club, and Doonside Beach.

Forty public swimming pools are also open across Durban, including Hambanathi, Belvedere, Buffelsdale, Verulam, Stanmore, Ntuzuma E, Durban North, Umlazi D, Lamontville, Westville, Clermont and 28 others (municipal list). Swimming pools operate Monday-Saturday (06:00-18:00) and Sundays/public holidays (09:00-17:00).

Residents are advised the status of all recreational facilities remains subject to change pending water quality tests and operational updates.
