Controversial US commentator Charlie Kirk killed; past SA remarks resurface
JOHANNESBURG — 11 September 2023
American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk died after being shot at a Utah rally, with his controversial comments about South Africa drawing renewed attention.
Kirk was fatally shot in the neck by an unidentified assailant during a rally in Utah on Wednesday, 10 September. Police confirmed the incident occurred at a political event. (Original report)
The 31-year-old faced criticism in multiple online clips circulated after his death. One featured Kirk telling Tucker Carlson: “I don’t want to live in that country, I don’t want to live in South Africa. I don’t want to live in resentment or bitterness. A country where I have to walk and drive around in armoured cars all the time, and I can’t leave my house after 10 pm” (May interview).
Kirk frequently commented on South African affairs, supporting former US President Donald Trump’s unverified view that white citizens face targeted violence. He publicly challenged a black South African about land ownership, using the term “land grabs” in their exchange. (Kirk’s social media archives)
In May, Kirk praised Trump for holding President Cyril Ramaphosa “accountable” during White House talks, tweeting: “God bless President Trump. He’s a president who is actually the LEADER of the Free World”. He simultaneously expressed concerns about farm murders. (Retweeted footage)
Online discussions also highlighted Kirk’s pro-gun stance. He stated at a recent event: “The idea is to protect the innocent. As long as you’re not doing things that would cause someone to believe that they’re being threatened by the presence of your firearm”.
The shooting occurred in Utah, a US state allowing firearms to be carried without permits. No further details about Kirk’s attacker were available at publication. (Police bulletin)
