DA faces ‘You’re in govt with ANC’ backlash over BEE billboard

The Democratic Alliance (DA) launched billboards accusing the ANC’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy of enriching political elites while “the majority of South Africans remain trapped in poverty” (DA statement).

DA federal chairperson Ivan Meyer described BEE as “state-sponsored corruption, theft and fraud by cadres”. He claimed it only benefited ANC-connected individuals.

Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille added that BEE requirements create “investment failures” because companies won’t cooperate with “the corruption required by the system” (Zille statement).

The ANC rejected the DA’s alternative “Economic Inclusion for All Bill,” calling it an “Anti-Transformation Bill” undermining redress efforts. The party said it remains committed to economic equity (ANC response).

Social media users criticised the campaign. One response read: “Apartheid made white people rich. On levels that there are billionaires and families still enjoying that money. So you’re only in support of fair policies when they redirect the wealth to white people? You’re a racist piece of sh*t.”

Zille claimed “poor black people” received better services in DA-led areas. She said DA policies “shut down the financial taps of the corrupt ANC elite” (Zille statement).

This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa calling DA-governed Cape Town South Africa’s “worst-performing metro” two weeks earlier. He cited poor service delivery expansion in townships (Ramaphosa parliamentary statement).

The DA’s Economic Inclusion Bill proposes rewarding job creation and skills development regardless of political ties.
