DJ Maphorisa Reveals Intense Competition in Amapiano Industry
JOHANNESBURG — 28 May 2024
Amapiano heavyweight DJ Maphorisa has revealed the tough realities behind the music industry’s glitz during a candid Metro FM interview. He described intense competition and shifting audience behaviors reshaping the scene.
Speaking to host Tbo Touch, Maphorisa admitted: “It’s tough now, it’s not easy – it’s not like before.” Touch reacted with disbelief: “Wait, wait, wait. I’m getting a headache. If I’m an upcoming artist listening to this conversation and the biggest artist says it’s tough, I’m going to give up. How is it tough, Phorry?”
Maphorisa explained audience challenges: “There’s too much competition. People have short attention spans. They may love one song from you and stick with that for about six months. But if you release 10 hot songs, not all of them will get the reception you expect.”
He cited personal experience with his album ‘Ngomoya’: “I dropped an album called ‘Ngomoya’. So far, I’ve released 28 songs, but they only really like one.” His example highlights the emotional pressure artists face when their work receives limited recognition.
Despite challenges, Maphorisa continues performing at top events like the “Scorpion Kings Live with Friends” concert scheduled for Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday, August 29.
The star’s transparency offers rare insight into the demanding nature of Amapiano success beyond public celebrations.
