Enhle Mbali apologises for racial slur at salon partnership launch
JOHANNESBURG
Actress Enhle Mbali has publicly apologised after facing backlash for using a racial slur during a Carlton Hair event in Hyde Park. She described her hair with the derogatory term, causing widespread criticism.
During her address, Mbali stated: “Listen, it’s the new South Africa and I’m allowed to say this. I’ve got k**ir hare. And the black people know exactly what I mean and the coloured people know exactly what I mean as well.” The video spread rapidly on social media.
Many condemned her use of the K-word, noting its deeply painful historical context and inappropriateness for describing ethnic hair. (Social media reactions)
In her apology video, Mbali explained: “I am posting this video to express my heartfelt apology as a black South African woman, for offending members of the South African community during my speech, as that was far from my intention.” She referenced the term’s complex history, adding they’d “rendered the K word’s humiliation untrue” where she grew up.
The incident occurred during celebrations of her new ambassador role for Carlton Hair’s ethnic hair division, announced days earlier.
Carlton Hair responded: “We unequivocally condemn any form of ethnic derogation or self-deprecation.” The company paused all promotional content featuring Mbali and will review partnership guidelines. (Company statement)
They further committed to “prioritise collaborations with voices that authentically amplify empowerment and cultural pride.”
