Scam alert: Fraudsters sell fake FNB accounts to foreign traders
JOHANNESBURG — 4 September 2025
Crimans are tricking Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals by selling fake First National Bank (FNB) accounts, exploiting high demand for South African banking services.
Many seek these accounts for easier cross-border trade, remittances and financial services scarce in their home countries (source not provided).
The scammers pose as FNB representatives, using fake or stolen documents to “make the setup appear legitimate” according to the original article (source not provided). They charge victims for accounts that do not exist.
Demand is high among traders in Harare, Bulawayo, Maputo and Beira who need SA accounts to pay suppliers or receive payments (source not provided). Without access, many turn to risky alternatives.
FNB confirmed the scams, stressing its official channels don’t operate this way. It has no branches in Zimbabwe.
“We are most concerned about the misuse of our brand,” said Roshan Jelal, Head of Fraud at FNB Commercial Chief Risk Office.
The bank urges anyone approached to report suspicious offers immediately (company statement).
