Hermanus Becomes South Africa’s Fastest-Growing Millionaires’ Hotspot
HERMANUS —
Hermanus, a coastal town long famous for whale watching, is now attracting millionaires faster than any area in South Africa. Its surge has made it Africa’s most rapidly expanding wealth hub.
According to the latest Africa Wealth Report by Henley & Partners and New World Wealth, Hermanus experienced a 50% increase in millionaires and centi-millionaires recently. The town now hosts around 1,700 millionaires and seven centi-millionaires.
This Whale Coast destination has shifted from being primarily a holiday retreat to a magnet for wealthy residents, drawing property investment from elite buyers.
South Africa remains Africa’s dominant wealth centre, with 41,100 millionaires (34% of the continent’s total), 112 centi-millionaires, and eight billionaires.
The Hermanus boom reflects a trend: high-end buyers increasingly prioritise scenic views, exclusivity, and relaxed coastal living over city centres.
Beaches like Voëlklip and Grotto maintain their charm, but the flood of millionaires is reshaping Hermanus into an unexpected luxury stronghold.
