MAFS SA: Bongani Opens Up About Love, Loss and Life

MAFS SA’s Bongani Opens Up About Grief and Marriage Journey

Married at First Sight South Africa’s Bongani Luvalo has revealed how he and wife Portia Baloyi navigated her father’s passing during the reality show’s experiment.

The emotional moment featured in Episode 11 of the Mzansi Magic show airing Sundays at 6PM (streaming on Showmax). Four couples participate, including Bongani-Portia, Palesa-Tshepo, Makoto-Nkuleleko, and Themba-Nelisa.

Bongani joined the show seeking genuine commitment: “I joined Married at First Sight to try a different approach in finding a wife, to cut out options and see if one can meet a person who’s committed to the institution of marriage.”

When Portia faced her father’s death during filming, Bongani struggled to support her: “The passing of Portia’s dad was tough. I couldn’t fully be there for her. Traditionally, I wasn’t seen as a husband yet.”

He credits therapy for emotional resilience: “I generally live in therapy… it’s a tool I need in the journey of life.” His survival strategy? “I don’t take things personally, and I know when to step back.”

Bongani believes in fellow couple Themba and Nelisa: “They came with intention, and they approach each day with respect.” The experiment taught him that “I love love, and that I still have work to do.”

Viewers can witness their continuing journey every Sunday at 6PM on Mzansi Magic or via Showmax streaming.
