Free entry at 21 national parks for annual SANParks Week
PRETORIA — 1 September 2025
South African National Parks (SANParks) will grant free entry to day visitors at 21 national parks nationwide from 22 to 26 September during the 20th annual SA National Parks Week. The initiative extends to the weekend of 27-28 September at selected parks.
A special launch event takes place on 21 September at Kruger National Park’s Mopani Rest Camp. Five Cape region parks are included: Agulhas, Bontebok, Table Mountain (excluding Boulders Penguin Colony and cableway), Tankwa Karoo, and West Coast National Parks. (SANParks statement)
The campaign aims to cultivate national pride and awareness about conserving natural heritage. “SA National Parks Week has proved to be a successful campaign that provides education and awareness about South Africa’s inclusive approach to conservation,” said SANParks.
While entry is free, costs for accommodation and paid activities like guided tours remain applicable. The week consistently draws large visitor numbers across participating reserves.
Some parks have special schedules: Table Mountain NP free access runs 22-25 September (extension pending), while West Coast NP won’t extend to the weekend due to peak flower season. Addo Elephant, Karoo, and Mountain Zebra parks join the initiative from 22-28 September.
All Northern and Arid region parks offer free access except Augrabies Falls and |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Parks (free until 26 September). Kgalagadi, Marakele, and Mapungubwe NPs are included for the full week.
Day visitors should confirm specific dates via SANParks’ official channels before planning visits.
