Springboks Clash with Japan at Wembley

Springboks to Play Japan at Wembley in November Test Match

South Africa’s rugby team will open their international tour against Japan at London’s Wembley Stadium on 1 November, kickoff 16:10 UK time. This historic match marks only the fourth meeting between the two nations.

The Springboks have played one official Test at Wembley before – a 28-20 victory over Wales in November 1998 under coach Nick Mallett and captain Gary Teichmann. They drew 31-all against the Barbarians at the same venue in 2016.

Japan famously defeated South Africa 34-32 at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, known as the ‘Miracle of Brighton’. The Springboks won their two most recent encounters in 2019 (team records).

Coach Rassie Erasmus welcomed the fixture: “We are delighted to be starting off our tour of the northern hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium.”

Erasmus added: “The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby.” He noted strong fan support expected: “We have had fantastic support from our fans in the UK for our fixtures in London.”
