Tyla Names Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa as Musical Inspirations
JOHANNESBURG — In a recent interview
Grammy winner Tyla credits South African icons Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa as her earliest career inspirations. The ‘Water’ singer revealed this during a conversation with Glamour magazine.
Tyla said she admired how both artists paved the way for local musicians. She explained: “I really admired Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa. They were like our pop stars. You know growing up in South Africa, just that they’re from somewhere where I’m from and they’re successful and they were just like rock stars. Their music was just infectious. It was everywhere in South Africa and they were like women and it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.” (Glamour interview)
Brenda Fassie, known as “The Madonna of the Townships,” was a songwriter and activist famous for tracks like ‘Weekend Special’. Her song ‘Black President’ became an anthem during Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment. She passed away in 2004.
Lebo Mathosa gained fame at 17 with kwaito group Boom Shaka. Her bold style and dynamic performances made her an icon for young South African women seeking self-expression (biographical records).
Tyla emphasized both artists proved South African women could achieve global success through authentic artistry. She continues this legacy in her own international music career.
