Tyla returns to South Africa after grandmother’s death

Grammy Award winner Tyla has returned to South Africa following the death of her grandmother. The singer confirmed her arrival through social media posts late on Tuesday.

Tyla posted an Instagram location pin showing she was in South Africa with the caption: “Chillin.” She included a picture of a springbok, South Africa’s national animal.

The singer also joined a viral social media trend, tweeting: “Need to learn that Khanyi Mbau dc.” This referenced the popular “Khanyi Core” dance challenge inspired by media personality Khanyi Mbau.

The TikTok trend began when Gen Z users rediscovered an old clip of Khanyi Mbau. Fans created the dance challenge to celebrate her iconic and unapologetic style.

Her return coincides with Tuesday’s announcement of her grandmother’s passing. Tyla has not publicly confirmed whether her return is specifically for funeral arrangements.

In a heartfelt online tribute, Tyla honoured her grandmother: “I thank God for your presence in my life. Thank you for all the love and all the life stories you would tell me.”

She credited her grandmother for teaching her about Zulu heritage, adding: “You were always proud of your mother and called us royalty because of her. Thank you for teaching me about my Zulu heritage and making me the artist I am today.”

Tyla ended her tribute: “Your presence will forever be missed. The sweetest soul & I love you forever Gran.”
